Composed between the 14th and 18th October 2004.
The excerpt you can hear here is from the last movement but in a version for three clarinets and morse code. (You have to imagine the bass line on the cello and an octave lower…) The morse code spells out the words “Please help me. The end is close. This is the Pauper’s Lament.”
The second movement is, happily, happier. Although the organ does break down the monkey continues dancing…
